C.O.M.E.T. Construction, Organizing, Membership, Education and Training
The purpose of comet training is to explain to the membership why every local union must organize unrepresented construction workers, and to show our members why it is important to support organizing within local #46 jurisdiction.
While the workforce in the construction industry has steadily increased over the years, and will continue to do so, union membership in the trades has declined. In the United States and Canada; union membership in the construction industry once stood at ninety percent. This number, which once stood for monopoly of the workforce, has declined over the years to less than twenty percent. The only way to reverse this decline is by organizing the unorganized construction work force. The comet program is designed to clarify the purpose of organizing. While the founders of our union understood that only by controlling the supply of sheet metal workers could they exercise genuine collective bargaining strength, and deliver good wages and benefits, many members of our local have objections to organizing new members. I believe that by participating in a comet training class, doubts about organizing will be answered, and a clear need to organize all sheet metal workers will be shown. All members of local 46 are cordially invited to attend and encouraged to provide their input to these training sessions.
